Chapter 3 New Beginnings

I am a very light sleeper, I woke up to the sound of raccoons in the garbage can outside the kitchen door.  I grabbed a white feathered pillow and a light blue comforter out of the closet in the living room and placed it next to Roland on the couch.  Roland was out like a light.  I figured if he woke he would probably be stiff from laying on the couch for so long, I know my back and neck were very stiff from the little time I was on the couch.  After I gave Roland the comforter and pillow, I went into my room and sat on the bed, swung my feet up under the blue and green comforter sheets, rested my head on my big fluffy blue pillow.  I reached over into my bedside table to grab the book that I was reading and started reading a chapter, soon I was dreaming.  My book was still in my hands.
Little while later, I could smell some bacon and eggs cooking in the kitchen. The first thought that came to me was someone is in my house. A little disoriented from the events that happened overnight, I got out of bed and tip toed into the kitchen to find Roland making me breakfast.  My brown hair was a mess, looked like the chipmunks took advantage of my hair and made a nest, while I slept.  The food smelt so good, and my mouth was watering.  I could hardly wait to eat this lovely meal that he had prepared for the both of us.  I could hardly believe that this man was making me breakfast, that has never happened to me before.  It is always me making breakfast for everyone else.
Then Roland said, "Hey, I hope you don't mind but I helped my self to make us brunch, you had the bacon and the eggs in the refrigerator, so I decided to make us breakfast. I am diabetic and I can't go long time without eating otherwise I get a hypoglycemic coma, and that is never a pretty site.  But, being here with you I feel I am in good hands.  Not only that but, I need to have you strong for your second day of work tonight."  I was breath taken.  I couldn't find the words to thank him for being so thoughtful. He was in my black and pink poke-a-dotted apron, and he was very attractive.  His brownish black hair has bouncing all over every time he moved and it was a mess from sleeping on the couch.
I said, "did you sleep well?"  He said, "Not really, the couch is kind of uncomfortable, but I handled it."  The meal was prepared and on the table, and it tasted like it smelt delicious. I thanked him for being thoughtful and making me such a nice brunch.  We returned a few words in conversation and then I asked him what his plan for the day was.  He had said he was going to shovel around the house for me.  I was thankful, but I only had one shovel.  I told him I would take care of it, but he insisted that he would help for he had his own shovel in the back of the big white truck.
After breakfast was done, I brushed my hair and my teeth, then started getting ready to go out and shovel some snow.  I put on my black parka, mittens, scarf and gloves.  He put on the same, except for he also had snow pants.  I wished I would have bought some while I was in town.  It had stopped snowing but it was about twenty degrees outside.
We both left the house, both bundled up nice and warm and then we headed out of the garage with shovels in hand.  We shoveled off the porch then the steps then the side walk.  Then Roland took a big shovel full of snow and throw it at me.  One thing lead to the next and we were both full of snow and starting to get cold and wet.  We both went inside the house, changed clothes, placed the old one in the dryer for Roland and I made both of us hot chocolate with extra marshmallows.  We sipped the hot chocolate, but it was so warm and so good it didn't take long for both of us to have it gone.  I looked into his big brown eyes and asked him personal questions about girls, his parents, and hobbies.  He said he liked to ski, and he has only dated three girls in his whole life, and nothing to serious.  I was very glad that he was not ashamed of his past.  He also asked the same questions.  I told him that I live with my parents until I was 18 and then moved and went to medical school, I also told him about my wonderful sister that was planning to move here in two weeks.  I explained how excited I was to have family close.  He then asked about the men in my life. I told him I had a very serious boyfriend when I was in medical school but he turned out to have many dark secrets.  We chatted for a few hours and then we both decided to lay down again and get some sleep before we both had to go into work for the night shift.
Roland slept on the couch by himself and I took the bed in the guest room. I told him if he got sore he could use my bedroom to sleep in.  I did not want to have him sleep in the guest room because it consisted of an old couch that smelt of  my grandma's house. The stench of old people is hard to get out of material.  The room itself smelt of a library for I had a lot of old books in that room.  I love the smell of opening an old book and smelling the pages as you turn them, they smell aged.  It didn't take me long to fall a sleep on the old couch.
When we both woke up it was time to get ready for work.  I let Roland take a shower first and start getting ready, and I waited for him to get out of the bathroom.  After he was done, he walked out of the bathroom with a towel rapped around the bottom half of his body.  He looked fantastic, with his dark chest hair still a little wet from the shower and his hair all slicked back.  He was very distracting, and when he asked if his clothes were out of  the dryer, I didn't hear him because I was too busy looking at his steamy body.  When I finally realized what he had asked me I told him they were on the kitchen table folded for him. As he strutted  to the kitchen, I jumped into the shower.  I was relieved that the shower still had warm water.  I wasn't sure if  the water heater was good enough to hold up with two showers because it was old and it needed to be replaced or repaired.
All of a sudden Roland came to the bathroom door and knocked, can I come in he asked, I was unsure what he wanted, but I said sure.  He stood by the sink, and talked to me while I was taking a shower.  He said, "Are you ready for your second night in the emergency department." I told him I am as ready as I am ever going to be.  He chuckled and then I heard the door open and close, I peeked around the fish designed shower curtain, and Roland was gone.  I jumped out of the shower, wiped my self down and then remembered that I forgot to bring in clothes to change into after I was done showering.  I wrapped my self tightly in a pink and white stripped towel, I must have looked graceful.  I tip toed into the living room across the wooden floor, as I was walking I looked behind to see where Roland was hiding.  Right in that moment he was smack in front of me and I knocked him over and I fell on the top of him with my damp, moist towel wrapped around me.  I was completely embarrassed.  I got up from the floor and I apologized for my clumsy behavior, and when I said that my towel effortlessly fell to the floor.  I was standing in front of Roland naturally naked.  As quick as I could I bent over and picked up my towel and protectively covered myself.  I walked as fast as I my legs would allow me, to the bedroom, closed the door behind me and dressed into jogging entire.  I was even more embarrassed standing in the bedroom remember the sequence of events that happened.   I could hardly get the motivation to come out of my bedroom.   Then with a little pride I came out of the bedroom, and Roland was standing in the kitchen, with a grin on his face.  I said, "What is that grin about," He said, "for a doctor you sure are graceful."  I asked what that was supposed to mean, he told me that he has never met anyone like me and that he really enjoyed staring at me, mostly without the towel.  Typical male answer.  He also told me that he would like to take me out on Friday night and have supper or a drink. He also stated that he would prefer if I wore clothes before dinner.  We both had a chuckle and I agreed to go out with him on Friday and that we would discuss the details later during the week.  I  had to talk to him about what had happened that day and I also had to explain to him that I am not ready for a relationship.  It was a very peaceful and glorious day, I did enjoy the time that Roland and I spent together, if the circumstance were a little different.  I was a little flattered that he asked me out but, I had a job to do here and I was not ready for a relationship and I did not want anyone standing in the way of my new career.
We both jumped into his big truck and headed down to the hospital, neither one of us said anything the whole ride to the hospital, it was like we were deliberately ignoring each other.  I was relieved when we got to the hospital to notice my car was still in the parking lot, snow covered and unharmed.  We both started our night like any other night. It was a nice night at work only a few patients came in which they only recieved bandaids and stitches for minor injures. Roland and I were a little bit on the edge all night but we both made amends that we would never talk about the towel incident again. And we never did.

I finally sat down and read this chapter. Good job. Can't wait to find out what happens. Will there be surprises or will what I'm thinking will happen--happen? Did that make sense? Debbie
